A reflection of 2019 in Zaatari with Professor Helen Storey and UNHCR Jordan
Over the past year, Professor Helen Storey from Centre for Sustainable Fashion has been working in close collaboration with UNHCR in Zaatari refugee camp in Jordan. Helen was led there by an ongoing project Dress4ourtime - a dress made from a decommissioned refugee tent which travelled around to communicate the complex issues and connections between mass displacement of people and climate change.

Together, Helen and UNHCR launched the ‘Made in Zaatari’ centre, a multi-use space designed for training, retail and community building, a place women could work and learn in an environment of comfort and safety. During this journey, Helen crossed paths with a refugee named Tarek, an artist who carved beautiful and intricate designs from objects he found in camp, including pencils, old shoes and a broom stick. This was the start of a great collaboration, which formed an exhibition of Tarek's jewellery and artefacts in Hatton Garden, London, with all proceeds going directly to Tarek and his family.
