The first time DVF ever saw a picture of the Statue of Liberty was when she was a little girl. Her parents were visiting New York and they sent her a postcard. For Diane, the Statue represented America. The first time she really saw her in person, DVF was 22 years old. She had just married Prince Egon von Furstenberg, and he was starting a bank job in New York. Egon flew over, but Diane chose to take the ship because she wanted to have some time to think about her future. She had her son inside of her and her little dresses inside her luggage. She was going to try to sell them in America. DVF arrived at dawn, and she looked up and there she was. That image is forever imprinted on Diane's mind.

Now years later and after leading the Museum fund-raising campaign raising over $100 million for the Statue of Liberty Museum, DVF has officially been named "The Godmother of The Statue of Liberty”.
