"One of the many things that I admire about Pierre Balmain is his success in creating designs that have proven to be always timeless, never trendy. His couture creations remain as fresh and glamorous today as when they first began startling his Parisian clients, over seventy years ago.
Our 44 François Premier collection, named for the historic address of Balmain’s original couture atelier, celebrates the unique and compelling legacy that M. Balmain has left behind for
us. As my team and I prepared for this collection, poring over the archives, we were struck by the many examples of our house founder’s sculptural skills, his command of proportions and
his clever pairings of lightness and structure. Our research has paid off and many of Pierre Balmain’s signatures can be quickly spotted in these offerings: his obsession with flowers,
mastery of color and, above all, the importance he gave to tailoring.
Working on the second season of this collection has been a welcome palette cleanser for me— allowing me to completely immerse myself in the couture origins of this house and focus my
concentration on our heritage. Beyond offering a needed break from the pressures of the runway shows, this collection also serves as an important reminder for me. As I’ve explained several times, I usually begin designing the house’s many other collections by thinking about how my generation dresses, often relying on today’s music and urban styles for inspiration. Working on 44 François Premier serves as a necessary complement to those efforts—since, in order to understand our present and to begin thinking about the future, we must first completely understand where it is that we are coming from."
