For his first runway collection as the house's Designer, Olivier Rousteing maintains Balmain's
couture signature, with a focus on complex embellishment and bold, new proportions. Inspired by
the androgyny of bullfighters' traditional "traje de luces" and the performance jumpsuits that Nudie
Cohn designed for country and western stars during Las Vegas' golden years of the early 60s,
Rousteing gives Balmain's sharp tailoring a palette of celestial white, sky blue, graphic black and
shining silver and gold with assorted pastels.
The patterned jackets and pants mix leathers and fabrics in the arabesque patterns found on
traditional cowboy boots and Deco embroidery underscores the anatomy. Spring's high-rise waist
is cinched by belts with outsize buckles. Rousteing's take on the toreador's bolero jacket is
cropped in front with a long back. Patchwork dresses mix fine embroidery, quilting and beading in
collage style.
Balmain's softer side is evident in the pajama suits with beaded tunics, cape jackets, tunic shirts,
flowing gaucho skirts and trousers in silk or glove-like kid leather. The Balmain biker jacket has a
feminine touch, shown with beaded tees under matching vests.
